How Done-for-You Course Creation Works: What the Process Actually Looks Like

You’ve decided you want professional help creating your online course. But now you’re wondering what that actually means in practice. Do you need to have your whole course mapped out first? How much of your time will it take? What happens after you say yes?

If you’ve never worked with a done-for-you course creation team before, the process can feel like a black box. You know you’ll end up with a finished course, but everything in between is fuzzy.

This post pulls back the curtain on what working with a done-for-you course creation team actually looks like, from the first strategy call to a fully built course ready for students, so you know exactly what to expect before you commit.

What “Done for You” Actually Means (It’s a Partnership, Not a Handoff)

The biggest misconception about done-for-you course creation is that you hand over your content and someone else builds your course while you go about your business.

That’s not how it works. And honestly, if an agency promised you that, you should be concerned about what you’d get back.

Done-for-you course creation is a partnership. You bring the expertise, the stories, the deep knowledge of your audience, and what they struggle with. Our team brings instructional design, production skills, tech setup, and marketing experience. Neither side can do it alone.

Think of it like working with an architect to build a house. You know how many bedrooms and bathrooms you want. They know how to make it structurally sound, beautiful, and functional. You wouldn’t want an architect designing your home without your input, and you wouldn’t want to map out the measurements and dimensions yourself.

The same principle applies here. Your course needs your voice, your perspective, and your real-world examples to be effective. What it doesn’t need is you spending months learning slide design, wrestling with your course platform, or staring at a blank sales page.

That’s what the team is for.

The Typical Done-for-You Course Creation Process

Every project is a little different depending on the scope and the package, but here’s the general arc of how a done-for-you engagement works.

Phase 1: Strategy Session

Everything starts with strategy. Before anyone touches a slide deck or writes a word of copy, you’ll sit down with your Content Coach for a private strategy session. This is where you define the foundation: who your course is for, what transformation you’re delivering, how to position your offer in the market, and how to price it for maximum revenue without overcomplicating your business model.

This session is also where we will map out your offers. Your course content can often be turned into multiple offers at different price points without creating additional content – foundational online courses, virtual workshops, coaching packages, and more. Your coach will help you see those opportunities and plan for them from the start.

Phase 2: Coaching Calls and Content Storyboard

Next comes a series of 90-minute coaching sessions with your Content Coach. This is the core of the content development process. Think of it as a series of collaborative working sessions where you’re “brain-dumping” your expertise, and your Content Coach organizes and streamlines your content in real time. Together, you’ll build out your Course Content Storyboard, a visual map of every module, lesson, tool, and action step in your course.

You’ll also develop video scripting bullet points for each lesson. They’re structured talking points that keep you focused and on track when you sit down to record (so you sound like yourself, not an AI robot).

This phase is where most of the strategic heavy lifting happens. Your coach is pulling out your expertise, organizing it into a learning journey that actually works for students, and making sure every piece of content is focused on getting your students to their goal.

Phase 3: Tools, Slides, and Design

With your storyboard locked in, the team creates your course materials. At minimum, you’ll get custom-branded templates for your tools (worksheets, checklists, guides) and slides. Depending on your package, our team may also write the tools, custom design them, and fully design your slide decks.

This is one of the biggest time-savers in the whole process. Most course creators spend weeks designing worksheets in Canva and building slide decks from scratch. With a done-for-you team, you get professional materials that match your brand without spending as much of your time on production.

Phase 4: Tech Setup and Portal Load-In

Once your content is created, the team handles the technical side. Your learning portal gets customized and branded, and all your content (videos, tools, text) gets loaded into the platform. Student tracking, content scheduling, and automation are all set up so your course runs smoothly from day one.

This phase alone can save you dozens of hours of frustration, especially if tech isn’t your strong suit.

Not sure which platform is right for you? Our guide to choosing tech tools for your first course walks through the key questions.

Phase 5: Sales Page and Marketing

For experts looking for support with marketing, our team also writes and designs your sales page, builds your checkout flow, and sets up payment processing. Some packages also include a full marketing launch plan, webinar resources, social media strategy, and promotional content.

The sales page work is worth calling out specifically. A strong sales page isn’t just a list of what’s in your course. It takes your prospective student on a journey from where they are to where they want to be. Having experienced copywriters and designers handle this means your page is built on a framework that’s been tested across hundreds of courses.

What You Need to Bring to the Table

This is the part most people want to know about: how much of your time does this actually take?

The honest answer is that you do need to show up. Not 40 hours a week, but consistently and engaged. The clients who get the best results treat the process as a priority, not something they squeeze in between client calls.

Here’s what your involvement typically looks like:

Before anything starts, we onboard. Before your first strategy session, our team does a full project kickoff. We familiarize ourselves with your company, your branding, and any existing content you’ve already created.

This is a good time to gather anything you’ve already produced that relates to your course topic, like:

  • Blog posts, articles, or published content
  • Workshop recordings or webinar replays
  • Slide decks from live presentations
  • Books or book drafts
  • Client-facing frameworks, tools, or templates
  • Rough notes, outlines, or voice memos

You don’t need to organize any of this into a neat package. Just upload what you have. Even rough material gives your team a head start and often contains some of your best thinking, the kind of insight that comes out naturally when you’re teaching or working with clients, not sitting in front of a blank document.

Clarity on your transformation (not your curriculum). You don’t need to show up with a course outline. You do need to be able to articulate, even loosely, the change your course will help someone achieve. A useful way to think about it: “My course helps [specific group of people] go from [where they are now] to [where they’ll be after].”

For example: “My course helps mid-career HR professionals go from reactive, piecemeal hiring practices to a systematic talent acquisition framework they can run on their own.”

If you can fill in that sentence, even roughly, you have enough to start. If you can’t yet, that’s okay too. Your Content Coach will help you get there in the strategy session. But the closer you are to knowing who you’re helping and what changes for them, the faster the early sessions move.

If you want to think about this before your first session, our guide to building a signature method walks through how to identify and structure the framework behind your work.

Your expertise and your stories. This is the one thing no team can provide for you. The good news? You don’t need to prepare a curriculum or organize your thoughts before we start. Everything we need is already inside your head. During your coaching sessions, your Content Coach will ask targeted questions designed to pull out your best thinking, your frameworks, your real-world examples, and the specific ways you help your clients get results. That’s what we’re good at. You just need to show up ready to talk about your work.

Time for sessions. You’ll have a strategy session plus (at least) three 90-minute coaching sessions spread over the engagement: one for storyboarding, one for tool development, and one for video scripting. These are working sessions, not status updates. Come ready to think, make decisions, and share your expertise.

Feedback on deliverables. As the team produces your storyboard, tools, slides, sales page, and other materials, you’ll need to review and give feedback. This doesn’t need to be a massive time commitment, but timely, thoughtful responses keep the project moving. The clients who go quiet for weeks are the ones whose projects stall.

Recording your course content. The team prepares your scripting bullet points, but you’re the one on camera (or on screen recording). This is your expertise, and it needs to be in your voice. We’ll guide you on format, structure, and length so you’re not guessing.

The total time commitment varies, but most clients spend roughly 3 to 5 hours per week over the course of the engagement. Some weeks are heavier (coaching calls, recording), some lighter (waiting on deliverables). The key is being responsive and available when the project needs you.

Your dedicated Project Manager will make this easy with weekly updates that land in your inbox with everything you need: a clear summary of what’s happening that week, your specific to-do items, and direct links to exactly where you need to review or upload something. You’re never left wondering what’s next or who to ask. Your PM handles all the coordination between teams so you can stay focused on your part of the work.

What the Team Handles (So You Don’t Have To)

This is where the “done for you” part really shows up.

Here’s what comes off your plate when you work with a course creation team:

Instructional design and content storyboarding. Your Coach builds your Course Content Storyboard, a visual map of every module, lesson, video, tool, and action step. This isn’t a generic template. It’s custom-built around your specific transformation, your audience, and your expertise.

Tool writing and design. Worksheets, checklists, blueprints, cheat sheets, reflection guides. The team identifies the right tools for each module, names them, outlines them, and depending on your package, writes the full content and custom designs each one to match your brand.

Slide templates and design. Every package includes a custom-branded slide template, so your course looks polished and professional. If you want to take it further, you can add on full custom slide design where our design team builds out every slide deck for your course modules.

Video scripting support. You don’t get a word-for-word script (that would make you sound robotic). Instead, you get structured talking points for each lesson that keep you focused and on track during recording. Some packages also include video editing so your final files are polished and ready for upload.

Sales page copywriting and design. For packages that include marketing support, the team writes your full sales page copy, custom designs it to match your brand, and builds it out on your platform. They also set up your checkout page, payment processing, and thank you page.

Learning portal setup. Your course hosting platform gets customized and branded. All your content, videos, tools, and text gets loaded in. Student tracking, automated delivery, and scheduling are all configured so everything runs smoothly from day one.

Marketing materials. Depending on your package, you may also get a full marketing launch plan, webinar scripting resources, a social media strategy with custom images and copy templates, and a paid ad strategy.

Add it up, and you’re looking at dozens of hours of specialized work handled by people who do this every day. That’s the real value: not just the deliverables themselves, but the time and expertise it would take you to produce them on your own.

How to Know If You’re Ready

If you’ve read this far and you’re thinking “this sounds like exactly what I need, but I’m not sure I’m at the right stage,” that’s a common feeling. Most of our successful clients felt the same way before they started.

The short version: if you have clear expertise, clients who get results from working with you, and the desire to reach more people through an online course, you’re closer to ready than you think. You don’t need to have your course mapped out. You don’t need to know what platform to use. You don’t even need to be sure about your topic. That’s what the strategy session is for.

What does matter is having the time and energy to be an active partner in the process, and the willingness to prioritize the project when it needs your attention.

A partnership mindset is what makes projects like this succeed. That doesn’t mean you need to have everything figured out. It does mean you’re willing to show up, make decisions, give timely feedback, and treat the project as a real priority on your calendar.
